When in Italy: Gelato Diaries

“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” ~ Albert Camus

Here is another series that I came up with while honeymooning in Italy. We drank wine, ate pasta, pizza, and of course gelato (at least twice a day). I documented these photos for my friend who was pregnant at the time. She said that she craved/ate gelato every time she saw one of my photos. Now I look back at these photos and I crave gelato myself – * not pregnant 😉

Every gelato you’ll have in Italy (in any town) will be the best you ever had. But it’s worth mentioning one gelato experience that stood out from the rest. We accidentally got off at the wrong stop but oh was it so glorious… San Gimignano. This is a small medieval town that sits on a hill in the heart of Tuscany. Most tourists visit this town to see the unforgettable stone skyscrapers resembling “Medieval Manhattan”. The views are incredible and it’s home to the world’s truly best gelato, Gelateria Dondoli on the main square (Piazza della Cisterna). We were a bit impatient to wait in the long queue so we decided to go to Gelateria dell’Olmo – just around the corner. They also claim to have the world’s best gelato – displaying awards to back up their claim. And I’m not one to disagree, it was definitely the highlight of my gelato diaries! 🙂

Here are five good reasons why you should eat gelato:

  • Health benefits: contains protein, calcium and vitamin B
  • Gelato is gluten free!!
  • Gelato is smoother and creamier than ice cream (heaven!)
  • Gelato is lower in fat and calories: uses milk instead of cream and no artificial colour/flavour
  • Makes you and your tummy happy (bloat free)
  • Tip: Don’t miss the limone gelato on the Amalfi Coast
