Visiting Blue Lagoon

Three years ago when I finished my Masters degree and booked my flight back home from Brussels, I flew with Icelandair and I remember that during my transit in Reykjavik I could not escape the ‘free stopover’ adverts.  Any passenger on a transatlantic stopover can request a free stopover buddy (Icelandair stopover offers up to seven nights at no additional cost, staff can plan your itinerary and give you a free tour ha!!). But as I was newly graduated grad student, I couldn’t afford a day in Iceland. I was heartbroken to pass up such an opportunity. Three years later I got married and we flew with Icelandair again (wink, wink). I was thrilled to start our honeymoon with a visit to the Blue Lagoon. As newlyweds, finally free from the months of planning a wedding, a celebratory relaxing start to our honeymoon, in the silky blue waters of the lagoon, couldn’t have been more perfect.

I’m happy to say that visiting the Blue Lagoon in Iceland is off my bucket list. Also, not stopping over the first time was for the better as I got to experience it with my husband on our honeymoon. Its milky, mineral-rich, algae and silica dense, piercing blue water and silhouette-shaping steamy appearance is out of a dream. We loved spending every minute of our five hours there before taking off to our next destination: Paris, to follow through with an ambitious exciting honeymoon schedule in Italia.

If you plan on visiting Blue Lagoon, here are few tips to keep in mind:

  • Prices are steep and will shake you a bit. So to better cope with the top of the world prices here are some suggestions: Pre-book a standard entrance ticket. Bring your own towel and slippers (we didn’t any because we were traveling light for our one month honeymoon). Drink their free spring tap water to stay hydrated. Bonus: I loved their mask bar in the middle of the lagoon, find it and get some silica and mud masks for free. 🙂
  • Layer up! The temperature and weather are inconsistent. We went at the beginning of September and it only got colder, especially after our visit to the spa.
  • Protect your hair: Before going into the lagoon, apply extra conditioner.
  • Don’t wear any jewellery to avoid any staining from the silica, algae and minerals.
  • Bring a waterproof case for your phone if you plan to take some photos! We bought ours at the Keflavik International Airport.
