The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is just brilliant and a spectacularly beautiful man-made masterpiece. It stands as one of the world’s largest mosques, and one that hilights the cultural diversity of the Islamic world through historical and modern architecture. We enjoyed our day there a lot and since we were staying in Abu Dhabi for six weeks, we decided to re-visit again at night before we left.
The Grand Mosque construction was completed in 2007, the architects were from all over: British, Italian and Emirati, and the design inspiration came from Turkey, Morocco, Pakistan, and Egypt (and other Islamic countries). The Mosque can host an astonishing capacity of ~ 41,000 worshippers and visitors. Some other unique elements of the Mosque: 82 domes, 7 crystal chandeliers that incorporate millions of Swarovski crystals, the world’s largest hand-woven carpet and a unique lighting system that was designed to reflect the phases of the moon (also the reason why we had to re-visit the mosque at night). 😉
Before you plan your trip to Sheikh Zayed Mosque, here are some tips:
- Like any other worshipping place: dress respectfully and appropriately. Ladies to enter the Mosque you have to cover your legs, arms or you get an Abaya (dress) when you are entering the site. No shorts for men, trousers preferred.
- During your day visit, bring your sunglasses. The reflection of the sun on the marble can be blinding hehe.
- No displaying affection or hugging when taking photos. Again, be respectful. 🙂
- Once you’re inside the Mosque you’ll be asked to remove your shoes. Feel free to bring some socks.
- Entrance fee: Free 🙂
This place is full of magic and was definitely a mesmerizing experience.
