Tips on How to Beat the Winter Blues

I didn’t realize I had the winter blues until the sun showed up last week. It felt like a caffeine kick but in fact it was the sunlight! The lack of sunlight and vitamin D can lead to feeling moody, fatigued and a bit down in the winter months. However, that shouldn’t be the case for too long. And not because it’s almost spring season but because of the alternatives that we can all consider to uplift our spirit and soothe our winter blues [also know as seasonal affective disorder (SAD)].

These are the top six tips that are part of my routine/rituals:

Tip # 1: Appearance

It’s easy to roll out of bed and layer up with whatever you find first, looking/feeling a bit slouchy! Your outfit can reflect and/or change your overall mood and emotions. So dress your best.

Tip # 2: Stay active with indoor and outdoor activities

Get yourself a one-month trial hot yoga membership. The best feeling is when you look outside the window from a +30c studio temperature while it snows outside. You’ll leave feeling refreshed and energized. Also, my sister recently posted a story on her instagram: “getting away without physically leaving” while she was painting palm trees on a canvas listening to tropical music and daydreaming at home. Find a hobby that fulfills you and takes you on a journey without physically going anywhere. 🙂

Tip # 3: Hygge happiness

Pick up a copy of ‘The Little book of Lykkee’ by Meik Wiking and you will notice that the way the Danes define happiness in the simple things can be of a lesson to us. Hygge is described by the author “like a warm hug, but without the physical contact” and “cozy intimacy”. Creating a hygge – a sense of warmth and coziness – atmosphere at home is easy, by spending quality time with your loved ones, being kind to yourself and enjoying the simple things. Embrace your downtime and disconnect for a calmer, cozy and happier you. And that leads me to the next tip…

Tip # 4: Scents, glow and music

My good friend brought me an essential oil diffuser from her trip to Egypt. It is a  game changer. Every home needs an essential oil diffuser. Different smells can impact your mood, evoke sweet memories and create a sense of comfort. My personal favourites are: peppermint (increases mental focus and wards off cold/cough), lavender (induces calmness) and vanilla (puts you at ease).

Low lighting and candles create a relaxing ambience. Make it a ritual, light up some candles in the evening to unwind and create a playlist that you would enjoy. Music can also elevate your mood, enhance your cognitive performance and could give you the right motivation to get you through to spring.

Tip # 5: Plan your summer vacation

Planning a trip in the future gives you something to look forward to. In this case, escape the winter and daydream of your next trip. We’ve already planned our vacation (in just 106 days yay) and I can’t even wait! The Mediterranean sea is on my mind. 😉

Tip # 6: Borrow a book from your friend

Pick a genre that you are passionate about or a topic that you would like to learn more of. A good book will reduce your stress, fills you with knowledge and takes you on a journey of it’s own.

Bonus Tip # 7: Chocolate is never a bad idea

Light up a candle, drink some tea from your favourite mug, get your book and indulge on some cocoa. Happy cozy winter times! ?
