A small town, halfway between Florence and Rome – 90 minutes by train, sits majestically above the tufo volcanic stone. Its charming cobblestone alleyways with flower pots on every other balcony will leave you speechless. If you want to get away from the busyness of the big cities then a stop in Orvieto will reward you with a delightful and memorable stay.
In the centre of this historic hilltop town you’ll find the most beautiful Cathedral, Duomu di Orvieto. Its facade is covered with delicate frescoes and golden details, one of the most striking and colourful Cathedrals (both inside and out) that I have ever seen. We enjoyed a stroll along the medieval walls overlooking rolling hills and wineries. The cafes and restaurants are so cozy and lovely looking. We grabbed espresso/gelato when we felt like it and continued on exploring, becoming more mesmerized with each step we took.
If you have the chance, don’t miss it! Take in all that Orvieto has to offer, from gorgeous alleyways to its romantic, historic aura. A place that’s so worth visiting. I know this wasn’t the last time we will stop in Orvieto.
Here are the top three things to see in this ancient, magical town:
- The Cathedral, Duomu di Orvieto
- Torre del Moro (An ancient clock tower – climb the 270 steps to experience the bird’s eye panoramic view of Orvieto)
- Take an Orvieto underground tour that leads you through the medieval tunnels and Etruscan wells.
