This international sports event brings the world together, no matter where you’re from. Throughout the (two week) duration of the Olympic games I come home and glue myself to the couch to watch athletes from different backgrounds compete. Some sports are unusual and ones that I wouldn’t really watch unless they’re featured in the Olympic games (such as curling, skeleton and luge). It’s always exciting and inspiring to see these athletes represent their countries and using sport as a common language for all competitors. My obvious favourite sport that I eagerly wait for every day now is figure skating. Such beautiful, strong and graceful performances this year.
We ordinary, sometimes nonathletic humans, know little of what these medal chasers go through, the effort they put into the sport and the national pride they carry. If none of my parental countries are represented then I like to root for smaller teams. Some athletes’ stories are so incredibly touching and encouraging. It’s a reminder for many of us that if you train / fight hard enough for the goal you’re trying to pursue then nothing is impossible.
On another note, we recently watched the movie “I, Tonya.” What an incredible film, I bawled my eyes out. If you haven’t seen it yet, go see it! Some of these athletes could have a win at their fingertips and yet lose it all at any moment. Like many things in life that we should not take for granted no matter what it is.
Here are a few reasons why you should watch the Olympic games:
- The Opening and Closing Ceremony: filled with entertainment and fun. Also, an opportunity to watch the cultural spectacle!
- The world comes together: it’s hopeful to witness a little peace in today’s world.
- Witness the ‘history making’ moments.
- Add the venue as a bucket-list travel destination.
- Maybe the Games will inspire you to try a new sport / hobby. Fun fact: during the summer Olympics you’ll find me looking to sign up for a local beach volleyball league or go swimming and feel like a champ (haha!)
Have you been watching the winter Olympics? What is your favourite sport? 🙂

February 19, 2018All of the things you said are very true!! I recently watched Sean White’s gold olympic run on the slope style event, and got so inspired to go to a ski and snowboard resort. I look more into Sean White, watched a few documentaries about him and decided that I will pursue whatever I do with the same amount of determination as him. He is not only a three time gold medal olympian, but he’s been playing and travelling in a band, an entrepreneur for a few start-ups and has his own clothing line!!

February 26, 2018It’s me, and many Russian who used to do it in their lifes. That’s why the Olimpic skaters come mostly from there….and from Canada- the countries of ice and skating! I always happy to see people skate! Especially my lovely ones in Ottawa! :-* 🙂
