Chasing Romantic Sunsets in Greece

We witnessed many beautiful (planned and unplanned) sunsets during our Greek vacation. Here I wanted to share them with you in hopes that they inspire you to plan your next seaside vacation. 🙂

My husband Peter always manages to plan surprise dates back in Ottawa and almost all my attempts at doing so have failed haha. It’s either because he has lived in Ottawa longer and knows much of what’s on in the city or we both go on the Narcity Ottawa website or other events website every so often to see what’s happening in the city. So I decided that I would plan a surprise date during this trip and maybe on future trips as well 😉 . Our first sunset was in Sounion, in the outskirts of Athens.

I had planned our date to end our Athen’s trip in Sounion, discover the temple of Poseidon, enjoy our first swim in the Mediterranean Sea, indulge on some mezes at the nearby restaurant ‘Acrogiali’ and watch the sunset from the hilltop Temple before we return to Athens to pack and continue our journey. The day couldn’t have been more perfect, we went on our day date at our own pace but right after the sunset, we had to rush to catch the bus back.

Similarly, I had planned another sunset date in Mykonos Island. My original date plan was to go for dinner/drinks at the Bill and Coo hotel but the friendly staff of our own amazing hotel ‘Artemoulas’ had suggested a different spot. The 180^ Sunset Barwith its breathtaking views, beautiful crowd, saxophone artist and a DJ playing music to match the descending sun. We drank our wine mesmerized by the views and lovingly and, in awe, appreciated the beautiful evening.

Onto our next Island, Naxos. I was really satisfied with our previously planned sunset evenings until Naxos surprised us with yet another one. We arrived in the afternoon and the friendly owner directed us to our studio apartment with a balcony overlooking Bougllavila flowers, welcomed us with a frappe and delicious homemade cookies. We dropped our bags and decided to go on a stroll to explore our nearby beach, mini markets, and restaurants. That evening, we witnessed one quiet sunset evening with no DJ, saxophone artist or any crowd. It was just the two of us in our bathing suits enjoying the sunset to the fullest.

Santorini, our last Island and one that we have seen and heard the most about. We agreed that if you want the real Greek experience then you need to extend your trip beyond just the picture-perfect Santorini. The main city, Fira, with its alleyways leading to countless restaurants and endless hotels with Jacuzzis and swimming pools. Oia town, a 30-minute bus ride from Fira, was a lot more charming and you have probably seen it’s most famous images, of blue domed churches, on your social media feed. We dined at a small restaurant behind the windmill then went to Fanari bar to conclude our ever so beautiful trip to the Greek Islands. Oia offered us incredible views of the Aegean Sea, sailing boats and contrasting white and blue church domes.

Greece, thank you for your generous hospitality, beautiful & kind-hearted people, delicious food, enchanting sunsets and most of all for all the memories you’ve allowed us to create! Méchri tin epómeni forá (Until next time).
