There are many agriturismo farmhouses in Tuscany and it’s a cottage-like destination for many Europeans. Meanwhile, for us honeymooners it was the perfect stop to recharge our energy before we continue with city / Island hopping in Italy. These farmhouses are usually accessible by car so if you plan to stay at an agriturismo farmhouse it’s recommended to rent a car or try to arrange a ride with your host – but keep in mind this doesn’t happen very often.
We had a delightful stay at the Agriturismo Fattoria di Vegi farmhouse. It’s sitting on the hills of Chianti overlooking rolling vineyards and olive groves. There was a lavender bush by the pool where we spent most of our day and we couldn’t have asked for more.
Here I share two poetry pieces written by my husband during our stay. 🙂
DAY 1
Tuscan farmhouses
that have been in the family
longer than Canada has been a thing.
Impossibly lovely and trying to get to,
old farmhouses on Tuscan hillsides,
with no wheels, leaving you to
imagine how it was in 1842
and why they would have left
Florence for this then.
And I still sorta wonder that now,
but also sorta, have the clearest,
quietest Tuscan mind you can imagine.
It’s harvesting season
but tomorrow they press.
You can get a light lunch prepared
but not tomorrow because it’s Saturday.
You can take the bus to Siena
from Castellina – but not on Sunday.
You can join a wine tour from Castellina
but it’s hard from your farmhouse
because it’s impossible to get to
without a car.
You can get dinner a kilometre away
but it will be impassably dark outside
by the time you’re done – but you’re
welcome to our wine – which has long
been in the family – this bottle
dedicated to my aunt.
I have wifi for you
but it doesn’t work inside.
From the olives to the pool
you should be fine though.
The rest we can discuss over breakfast,
which is big and included.
Buenaserra!
DAY 2
By the Tuscan pool
our laidback lounge chairs
in front of an overflowing
lavender bush, saturating our
in-breaths with their sweet
soothing smells
on the deck of the infinity pool
overlooking the sloping rows
of vineyard hills, surrounded by
Cyprus and olive trees
sipping on the white Chiastri
family wine extracted from
the grapes in our view.
Clouds peppering the mid-September
sun, water too cold for me
but not for her.
